What is a crown?
A crown is a tooth-shaped cover placed over a tooth that is badly damaged or decayed thus providing an effective treatment option. A crown, which many people call a cap, is made to look like your tooth. In addition, dental crowns may be used to anchor a dental bridge or to cap a dental implant post.
What are the different materials used?
Crowns can be all metal, porcelain fused to metal , or all ceramic. All ceramic crowns may be made of porcelain, resins, or dental ceramic materials. They create an extremely natural-looking appearance and are typically used on front teeth. The tooth-colored ceramic material is translucent, like the enamel of your natural teeth, and size and shade can be carefully matched to complement the rest of your smile. Metals include gold alloy, other alloys (palladium) or a base-metal alloy (nickel or chromium). The all-metal crowns are stronger and are better choices for back teeth.
What is a temporary crown?
Crowns can be prefabricated or made in a laboratory. Prefabricated crowns are made of plastic or stainless steel and can be used as a temporary restoration until a permanent crown is manufactured. They are cemented using a temporary cement so they could be removed easily for the permanent crown placement.
What is a tooth buildup?
Besides the crown, your dentist may need to build up a foundation to support the crown. A foundation is needed if large areas of the natural tooth structure are decayed, damaged or missing.
What is Post & core?
Placing a Post and Core is a procedure that is required in order to rebuild and strengthen a tooth thathad root canal treatment. It adds the proper support necessary to restore a tooth with a cap or crown.
The post itself is a metallic or reinforced fiber structure that is placed within the root of a tooth that has had a root canal (endodontic procedure). When a root canal is performed, the nerve is removed and the space it occupied is filled with a special filling material.
A core is built from filling material around the part of the post that sticks out of the root after the post is cemented into the root. The core is shaped so that it will anchor and retain a crown.
The use of a post is determined on an individual basis based upon support and structural strength required.
